Del reinar al vasallaje : armonía y despojos en los Comentarios reales

Abstract

In this paper the author examines scenes from the Comentarios reales in which the humanist harmony of the historical account of Inca Garcilaso de la Vega is interrupted in order to allow for the emergence of remnants, fragments, and ruins from the past. The author proposes that the narrator oscillates between metaphor and metonymy as figures of Colonial discourse. While the goal of metaphor is to draw analogies between cultures, metonymy operates in reverse by privileging the specificity of the Inca world, which grants resilience to the fragment.
